Why Use Mirapex for Fibromyalgia?

Mirapex for Fibromyalgia

Sometimes, getting started on the road to recovery when it comes to fibromyalgia can be really difficult. We may have to try a number of different items in order to determine the best one(s) for our particular needs, and our doctor will give us recommendations and such.

One medication that has been showing a bit of promise for those with fibromyalgia is known as Mirapex (the generic name for this medication is pramipexole). What is Mirapex, what is it usually used for, and how can it help fibromyalgia patients? Let’s take a peek.

What is Mirapex and What is It Usually Used For?

Mirapex is quite an interesting drug. This particular drug helps with the way that your muscles move throughout your body, specifically through the use of dopamine.

This particular chemical works with all of your senses, making it so that you are able to move around and react to the senses that you’re experiencing.

The more dopamine that your body has, the easier it is for you to control your muscles and the way that you move. If you don’t have enough dopamine, it’s going to be a lot harder for you to move around.

Mirapex, contrary to popular belief, was not developed specifically for fibromyalgia, even though we’ll explore how the two are related in the next section of this article.

It was actually put together during the ’90s in order to help people who were fighting off the symptoms and issues that happen with Parkinson’s Disease.

If you don’t know about Parkinson’s Disease, it’s essentially a disease that makes it so that you are unable to control how your body moves. Tremors can be incredibly violent and are common in most of them.

As the disease gets worse, the patient may not be able to communicate, walk, or do any of their activities of daily living. Eventually, this will lead to their passing, either from being unable to care for themselves or because of movement in an area that is hazardous.

What Mirapex was developed to do was to help increase how much dopamine the brain was using. As a result, it helped to reduce the number of tremors that a patient was dealing with on a regular basis.

It also helped to reduce the speed in which the body would deteriorate as a result of the loss of control that was going on.

Mirapex for Fibromyalgia Symptoms and Overall Treatment Plans

When did Mirapex start coming into play for fibromyalgia patients? Actually, it’s only just beginning. As of recent, there have only been a small handful of studies put together that give us any sort of idea as to what is going on with Mirapex and how it can help out those who are fighting off fibromyalgia symptoms.

The thought behind the studies is that, because fibromyalgia has something to do with the fact that our senses are on overload, then we are going to be able to get it under control if we make sure that the hormones that take care of our senses are working properly.

By taking Mirapex, what is theorized is that it will make it so that the sensors aren’t firing off as much as they would be without it. This, in turn, is supposed to help reduce the amount of pain that a patient would feel.

And, on top of that, it is supposed to help them with their movement as well – patients may be less stiff, they may feel more in control of what is going on, and the strain and stress on their bodies would be greatly lessened.

Since the range of motion and mobility are big issues for people who fight fibromyalgia symptoms, it’s really important for us to try to utilize medications that other treatments that can make it so that we move more easily.

Think about it – if you’re unable to move in the morning, wouldn’t you want to make it so that your body can move more easily and so that you can be a lot more healthy and active? That’s why Mirapex came up as a potential treatment option for patients.

So, there were studies done in order to check out if Mirapex would really do anything. It was a double-blind test that basically gave some people a placebo, and others the actual Mirapex, and then they wanted to see what the results were.

It went out for about 15 weeks, and by the end of the study, the participants were taking about 5 milligrams of Mirapex in the morning with their food. This study, in particular, has shown that there is something going on because those with the Mirapex had much more relief than those with the placebos.

At this point in time, however, Mirapex is actually not approved for fibromyalgia symptoms. There are a number of different trails that are being put together in order to see if the drug is really as helpful as these first studies have perceived.

It’s a big question, whether dopamine really makes that big of a difference for fibro sufferers. There are other tests being scheduled and, if they continue to show the same sorts of results, it’s very likely that Mirapex will be approved for this particular purpose.

It may take a while, as it usually does when a medication gets approved for secondary use, but it will likely be on the market for fibromyalgia patients within the next decade or so.

Mirapex is definitely a good option for those who have been trying to find something new to try for their particular fibromyalgia symptoms. Because the path can be so frustrating, you want to make sure that you’re open to the different options that your doctor may bring to you over time.

They will talk to you about potential issues and whatnot, so you don’t have to be concerned about something going wrong with your treatment. If you are considering Mirapex, contact your primary specialist to figure out the best course of action.
